Trip Generation Estimator Tool

This free, web-based Trip Generation Estimator Tool allows transportation engineers, planners, architects, and developers to quickly estimate vehicle trip generation for up to five different land uses. Simply select a land use category (e.g., Residential, Office, Retail, Car Dealership, Industrial, hospital, educational), enter the number of units (e.g., dwelling units, square feet, students), and the tool will generate:

  • Weekday Daily Trips
  • AM Peak Hour Trips (In/Out)
  • PM Peak Hour Trips (In/Out)

🕗 What Are AM and PM Peak Hour Rates?

Peak hour rates represent the number of vehicle trips generated during the busiest one-hour period of the morning (AM) or evening (PM) travel demand—typically aligned with commuting patterns. These peak periods are critical for evaluating congestion impacts at intersections and access points.

  • AM Peak Hour: Usually between 7:00–9:00 AM
  • PM Peak Hour: Usually between 4:00–6:00 PM
  • The tool estimates In-bound and Out-bound vehicle trips separately for more detailed traffic impact understanding.

Trip Generation Estimator

Estimate weekday, AM and PM peak hour trip generation for up to 5 different land uses. Select a land use, enter the number of units, and click “Calculate Trips”. Units may represent square footage, number of dwellings, or employees depending on the land use.

📋 Disclaimer: The trip generation rates used here are generalized averages based on commonly referenced planning sources. They are intended for quick reference or preliminary planning only. Actual rates may vary based on geographic context, development type, access characteristics, and local policies.
