Pavement BOQ Estimation Tool

The Pavement Design Calculator and BOQ Estimator is a free, web-based tool that allows engineers, planners, and infrastructure consultants to quickly calculate pavement layer thicknesses using the AASHTO methodology, and then automatically estimate material quantities based on project geometry.

Pavement BOQ Estimator

Layer Thicknesses (inches – editable)

Optional: Material Densities (kg/m³) for ton conversion

💡 How It Works

  1. Start with the Pavement Design Calculator to determine layer thicknesses if you dont already have them.
Input key parameters like ESALs (Equivalent Single Axle Loads), subgrade CBR, reliability, and serviceability to calculate the required thickness of asphalt, base, and subbase layers. Not sure what ESALs are? Learn more about ESALs and their importance in pavement design or try the Traffic to ESAL Convertor.
  2. Estimate BOQ Automatically
Click the “Estimate Pavement BOQ” button to move to the next step. The tool will transfer your calculated layer thicknesses into the BOQ Estimator, where you can enter road length, width, shoulders, and compaction factors to get a complete Bill of Quantities for your pavement layers.
  3. Adjust as Needed
You’re free to modify the thicknesses or geometric inputs on the BOQ page. The output is ideal for cost estimation, tender documentation, or preliminary engineering design.

  • Ideal for consultants, city engineers, or students learning pavement design
  • Developed by transportation engineers with real-world project experience

⚠️ Disclaimer

This tool provides a simplified estimate of pavement thickness and BOQ quantities for preliminary planning purposes. For detailed design, localized soil testing, traffic studies, and agency specifications must be considered.
